Generally speaking, cylinder blocks require refacing or “skimming” following some sort of engine failure which results in the block surface becoming overheated. Any distortion caused by these stresses will need to be removed to ensure the new head gasket has a perfect surface on which to seal.
Some engine blocks usually requires refacing following the installation of cylinder liners/sleeves.
Cylinder blocks can be made of various materials which can be hard, soft or even a mixture of the two.
Many modern engines utilise MLS (multi-layer steel) or shim type head gaskets and these require the mating surfaces of both head and block to have a very fine surface finish. The machinery and tooling that we use at H T Howard is capable of meeting these fine tolerances.
Machining Cylinder Blocks in Jamaica
Commonly used materials include aluminium, cast iron, compacted graphite iron (CGI) and cast steel. Some blocks have separate cylinder liners which can be made of different materials to the main body of the block which presents the additional challenge of machining “mixed metals” within a single job.
At AC’S Engineering Ltd. we have the correct tooling to achieve the best surface finishes and tolerances for all block types.
Engine Block Reboring in Jamaica
Engines are subject to wear and stress from day-to-day driving, overheating and overloading.
Contaminates that enter the engine through the air intake or through the engine oil system cause wearing of the cylinders and on the piston surfaces. As cylinder wear increases, engine efficiency decreases to the point that the cylinders must be bored and the pistons replaced to return the engine to peak operating efficiency. These pistons would usually be an oversize from the standard piston.
Reboring an engine is necessary when the cylinder wall is:
- Damaged more than honing can resolve. (Deep scratches / marks)
- Un-round, or oval (this can be caused by overheating)
- Flat spots in the cylinder wall
- Out of specification in Diameter
Important: Before an engine bore is possible, we will check to ensure a set of oversize pistons are available for the engine and if not we may have to complete a relining/re-sleeving process as well.
This service would be available for almost every engine from Car, Light Commercial, Agricultural, Plant + Marine applications.
